Seeing Eyes - Scene 1: The Old Dog
Some silly story I thought of after seeing a Bored Panda video featuring an old blind dog with his own seeing-eye dog. I ended up thinking of two kemonomimi dog boys.

The moment my world had gone dark, I thought that everything was over. It was too soon, I thought. I was at the peak of my adulthood, a proud, hardworking mongrel with pure white fur many envied. However, nothing readied me for the sudden illness that took my eyes. And when that happened, I thought that there was nothing else I could do. My sense of smell and my hearing was sharpened, definitely. But without my eyes, I couldn’t sense the world before me any longer. It was all darkness.
I had tried adjusting, attempted to walk around with a cane in hand and use the grooves on most roads to guide my way, but after a few close brushes with passing cars, I thought to myself that this wasn’t worth it. From then on, I decided only to come out whenever I needed something. Without my eyes, I could feel the fur on my head and around my ears start to mat. Less and less people complimented me on my looks and at some point, I could even feel them attempt to move away from me whenever I approached. It felt like the end for me.
But one day, I got an unexpected visit from my sister. Her scent was certainly familiar, but I could sense someone else with her. The scent tipped me off to another male dog. But… he didn’t seem like her romantic partner. He smelled clean and somehow… younger? Without my eyes, there wasn’t much I could go on about him.
“Who did you bring here, Yuki?” I asked, my voice seemed gruff, I thought. But I supposed not talking much to others would do that to you. Since I lost my eyes, a job had been hard to get and I’ve been living off an allowance from the government which my sister helps manage.
“I had been thinking about getting you someone to help you, Hoshi,” she responded. She sounded unsure, like she was afraid of how I’d react to her decision. She was right to feel that way, though. I felt strange about this. Did she think I was so helpless? That I wouldn’t be able to function with another dog by my side?
“I’ve been doing fine--”
“-- No, you haven’t,” her voice was suddenly stern. I could hear a small whimper. Was that from the boy she brought? “You’re a mess, Hoshi. I think having someone to look after you will do you a world of good. Come here.”
Biting back a growl, I got up from my couch and moved towards her scent. It took a while of practice, but I was able to gauge where to stop so I wouldn’t bump into her. At this range, I could smell the boy more keenly. He didn’t seem like much of an adult. It’s as if he had only recently matured.
“This is Maple. He’s a fresh nursing graduate. I thought he’d be a good match for you, Hoshi. He enjoys traveling like you do,” there was a bit of playfulness in Yuki’s voice, I thought. Did she honestly think I’d like this pup from the get go?
I felt hands-- the pup’s hands-- take mine in a handshake. There was some strange kind of affection behind his touch, I felt. He was eager. He was warm.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you Mr. Hoshi. I’ll do my best to care for you,” his voice was just as strangely warm as his hands. It was something I hadn’t felt in a while, not since I had lost my eyes.
“Right.” I dismissed him coldly. Then I turned my head towards Yuki’s scent.
“If I don’t like him, I can have him dismissed, right?”
“Give him a chance, Hoshi. Just two weeks. If you don’t like him after those two weeks, then I’ll let you dismiss him.”
I could pick up the smallest of whimpers from that pup. Maple, wasn’t it? His feelings were… very easy to read, it seemed. Even without my eyes. I had to admit I was a bit intrigued.
“All right. I will.”
Then I moved to turn to the new pup. “Guess I’m stuck with you for a while.”
“I’ll do my best for you, Mr. Hoshi,” he seemed to be eager again and his warmth reverberated through his voice. A little change in the air hinted at a wagging tail, too.
Yuki seemed to relax, and I sensed her scent moving away from us. “That’s settled then. I’ll come visit you again next weekend to check on you both. I hope you two get along.”
Looks like there’ll be quite the week ahead of us, then.
