Before the Boat: 2

Below is the second in a series of short writings on Cinnis' past prior to their adventures in Gravir. Nothing written below will affect how they are in the campaign currently.

But hell yes I'm totally enjoying this whole creative exercise hahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaa~

Before the Boat - 2

After that chance watching the dancing elf in the forest, Cinnis changed. Instead of quietly sitting down to study magic or attempt to wield the tools of the hunt like their brothers, they studied the arts on their own. They often visited the nearby town on land to watch street performers and approached their sisters’ music tutor in private to learn to sing. While the tutor would usually turn down students like Cinnis, she changed her mind when she heard their voice. She heard potential and took it upon herself to secretly cultivate it, though she knew that Cinnis’ father, the tribe chief, wouldn’t approve of his middle son not wanting to learn how to fight and use magic like the rest of the male kind.

In the Sedonsath family, there were six children. Cinnis was the fourth after two older brothers who were both skilled in hunting, though one had better knowledge of the arcane arts. The third child, Cinnis’ older sister, was keen on learning how to manage a tribe, and watched their father closely while learning what was typical of a merfolk destined to help lead. After Cinnis were two younger siblings, a girl and another boy. The boy was Father’s favorite and loved playing with the driftwood the tribe’s craftsmen had fashioned into a toy sword. Cinnis’ younger sister, meanwhile, shared their interest. She was the one who took music studies seriously and was allowed by the family to take up the art of dance on land with an elven instructor. Cinnis envied her greatly.

Though Cinnis didn’t follow their family’s ways, there was one thing they certainly inherited: Father’s stubborn will. If there was something they wanted, they would do whatever they could to get it. And when they turned eighteen, they decided it was time for them to truly find their own destiny. Under the guise of further magic study and gathering materials, they set for the hidden tavern he had found years ago. Over the years, they had peeked in every now and then, watching from afar but never participating in the culture. This night, however, they were determined to make it different. They went in, sat among the audience, and took in the entertainment that celebrated the spaces between and beyond common society.

Among the performers there was the elf Cinnis had seen years ago. This time, the performance was different.

“Ladies and gentlemen, and everyone in between! Please welcome to the stage, Legahl Azh!”

The crowd erupted into applause and some shouts of “Mother!” as a vision of sheer beauty with towering height walked on to the stage. Legahl Azh had a massive blond braided updo upon her head, embellished with bejeweled chains. Wearing shimmering green silk dress, also embellished with jewelry, the elf seemed much more than a queen on the stage. With her radiant presence, she appeared like an actual goddess. With her was a beautiful golden lyre engraved in a typical ornate elvish style. Strumming upon it once, a myriad of dancing lights flew out into the hall, lighting it dimly but also setting a mood for a performance.

The elf took a breath, then began a song*.

Night after night, I close my eyes
And I wonder when the sun will rise
Day by day, I live my life
And I try my best to do what's right

A moment of hope is all I need
To keep me moving on
Through the dark, till I see
What's left to be revealed to me

Cinnis found themselves absolutely enthralled. It wasn’t that different from what they felt years ago, on that chance experience. Their blue eyes fixed upon the elf as their hands clasped together over their heart.

If I dream
Everything I wanna be
If I dream
All the possibilities
If you just believe
In your wildest dreams
They will come true
They will come true

As she sang, Legahl’s silvery eyes drifted over the audience and the moment they fell upon the violet-skinned merfolk, they latched on. Cinnis’ heart caught in their chest. It was as if the elf knew… and it was as if the elf was singing the song especially for them. At the end of the song, Legahl smiled and winked in Cinnis’ direction and took a bow before continuing the rest of her set, a number of other musical performances before a dance number wherein she tore off the lower half of her gown to reveal a tight-fitting outfit meant to allow her to move acrobatically. Cinnis was absolutely starstruck. They had to meet Legahl.

Pushing through the crowd at the end of the night, the merfolk tried to muscle their way past loyal fans of the elf. But, of course, considering how popular the elf was and her lifespan, the crowd seemed almost impenetrable. However, as Legahl came out of the backdoor of the tavern, she quickly looked over the sea of patrons before her and immediately she caught hold of the very distinct sight of violet skin and red finned ears.

“You there! Merfolk! Come over here!”

All at once, Cinnis felt blood rushing to their cheeks as what seems to be Legahl’s buff (and leather-clad) half-orc assistant pushed through the crowd to take the merfolk and usher them to the elf’s side.

“Haven’t I seen you a few years ago? Oh wait… you’re the one who often peeks in, right? Come with me.”

Everything passed like a blur—Cinnis felt as if they were being whisked away into some kind of fairytale, with this androgynous elf queen taking them away into a carriage. This night, they planned to finally take hold of their destiny. But it seemed as if destiny was taking their hand instead…
